A new portable typewriter combining a 6-inch E Ink display with a mechanical keyboard has launched on crowdfunding platforms. The device, called AUTEUR, boots in 10 seconds and immediately opens a simple word processor with no connectivity features.
Unlike traditional laptops or tablets, AUTEUR intentionally lacks WiFi, Bluetooth, or any pre-installed apps beyond its core writing software. Its 6-inch E Ink screen provides a paper-like reading experience, while the mechanical keyboard offers tactile feedback for sustained typing sessions.

The device features a built-in battery and a minimal footprint—no internet, no notifications, no distractions. According to the developer, the goal is to create the closest digital analog to a classic typewriter without software complexity.

This device is strictly offline—no cloud syncing, no web browser, no app store. Files are saved on internal storage, with a microSD slot for transfer. The mechanical keyboard uses Cherry MX-style switches, offering a familiar feel for typing enthusiasts.
What This Means
For writers, AUTEUR represents the ultimate digital tool for deep work. By removing every digital distraction, it forces the user to engage only with their text—a model that could improve productivity and reduce screen fatigue.
However, the lack of connectivity also means no automatic backups or collaboration features. Users must deliberately transfer files via card or cable. This trade-off might appeal to those seeking a deliberate, slow writing process, but could frustrate modern workflow needs.
The crowdfunding campaign seeks to validate whether the market for such a niche device is sustainable. Early backers can secure units at a discount compared to the planned retail price.
