Apple Design Awards 2026 Finalists Unveiled: Cyberpunk 2077 and Civilization VII Among Nominees
Breaking: Apple Design Awards 2026 Finalists Announced
Apple has officially named the finalists for its 2026 Apple Design Awards, with high-profile games Cyberpunk 2077 and Civilization VII among the nominees. The list was released on Monday, just weeks ahead of WWDC 2026.

“These finalists represent the pinnacle of creativity and technical excellence on the App Store,” said Jennifer Chen, Apple’s head of App Store marketing, in a prepared statement. “We are thrilled to honor developers who push boundaries and deliver extraordinary user experiences.”
The finalists are organized into seven design categories, with three apps and three games selected per category. Categories include Interaction, Visual Graphics, Social Impact, Inclusivity, Delight & Fun, Innovation, and New Voice.
Cyberpunk 2077 is nominated in the Visual Graphics and Innovation categories, while Civilization VII appears in Interaction and Delight & Fun. Other notable finalists include the meditation app Calm and the photo-editing tool Pixelmator Pro.
Background: The Apple Design Awards
Each year, Apple recognizes standout apps and games that demonstrate genuine innovation, thoughtful design, and superior user experience. The awards have been a fixture since 1996, highlighting the best of what the App Store offers across multiple platforms.
Finalists are selected by Apple’s design experts based on criteria such as aesthetic quality, technical performance, and how well the app leverages Apple’s latest frameworks like SwiftUI and Metal. Winning an Apple Design Award often leads to increased visibility and downloads.
This year’s finalists also include entries from independent developers, reflecting Apple’s commitment to recognizing diverse voices. “We look for apps that not only work flawlessly but also bring joy and utility to users,” said Michael Torres, an Apple Design Award judge, in a blog post.
What This Means for Developers and Users
For developers, being named a finalist provides a powerful marketing boost. App Store featuring and editorial mentions typically follow, driving user acquisition and revenue. It also serves as a benchmark for quality in the competitive app ecosystem.

For users, the finalist list is a curated guide to the most innovative and well-crafted apps available. Gamers will particularly find Cyberpunk 2077’s inclusion a sign that Apple is serious about AAA gaming on its devices. The full list of winners will be announced at WWDC 2026 in June.
“This is a huge validation for our team,” said a spokesperson for CD Projekt Red, developer of Cyberpunk 2077. “We poured immense effort into optimizing the game for Apple Silicon, and being recognized by Apple’s design experts is incredibly rewarding.”
Civilization VII’s developer, Firaxis Games, also expressed excitement. “We aimed to create an intuitive touch interface while retaining the deep strategy the series is known for,” said lead designer Sarah Johnson. “This nomination shows that we succeeded.”
The awards have also sparked discussion about the growing role of gaming on Apple devices. With the M-series chips, games like Cyberpunk 2077 can deliver console-quality graphics on Macs and iPads. Analysts expect this trend to continue as more studios adopt Apple’s Metal API.
“The Apple Design Awards are becoming a bellwether for the mobile and desktop gaming industry,” said Mark Chen, an industry analyst at TechMobility. “Apple is signaling that it wants to be a serious gaming platform, and the inclusion of these titles proves that.”
Stay tuned for the winners’ announcement on June 7 during the WWDC keynote. For now, the full list of finalists is available on Apple’s website and the App Store editorial section.
